Target Help
Most unopened items in new condition and returned within 90 days will receive a refund or exchange. Some items have a modified return policy noted on the receipt, Target policy board (refund exceptions), Target.com or in the item department. Items that are opened or damaged or do not have a receipt may be denied a refund or exchange.

Returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited. Other restrictions may apply.
  • If you’re not satisfied with any Target Owned Brand item, return it within one year with a receipt for an exchange or a refund.
  • ​Open music, movies, video games and software cannot be returned, but may be exchanged at the store for the same title, for the same or different gaming platform.
  • Open airbeds cannot be returned, but may be exchanged for a similar item.
  • Open or defective collectibles (e.g., sports cards, special edition Barbie dolls, porcelain dolls, action figures and die-cast cars) cannot be returned.
  • All electronics and entertainment items must be returned within 30 days for a refund or exchange. For these items purchased between 11/1 – 12/25, the 30-day refund period will start on 12/26. 
  • Drones must be returned within 14 days for a refund or exchange. For these items purchased between 11/1 – 12/25, the 14-day refund period will start on 12/26.
  • All items purchased with a carrier contract at a Target store must be returned or exchanged within 14 days and may be subject to early termination fees per carrier contract. Contract items and carrier plans must be sold and returned by a Target Tech Rep.
  • Holiday items and limited-time-only collections may have modified return policies.
  • Target stores cannot accept international returns or exchanges, including international returns and exchanges of online purchases.
  • Target REDcard℠ debit and credit card holders will receive an extra 30 days to return nearly all items purchased with their REDcard at Target and Target.com. See Target.com/REDcard for full details and exclusions.
  • Items purchased at Optical, Pharmacy, Starbucks and Target Tech must be returned or exchanged at these areas.
  • Target Mobile GiftCards and Target eGiftCards cannot be returned or redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law.
  • Gasoline powered items such as lawnmowers can only be returned to a Target store and must be completely emptied of hazardous substances such as gasoline or oil at the time of return. If your item contains hazardous residue contact Target Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.

Most beauty items bought in stores or online can be returned, even if opened, within 90 days with your receipt, or up to 120 days if purchased with your Target REDcard™.

In most cases your refund will automatically go back to the original form of payment used for the purchase. In the event you used multiple forms of payment, your refund may be issued across all payment methods used.

For information about refunds to a third-party credit card, contact your card-issuing financial institution.

For returns made using our online return center, your refund will be credited back to the original payment method within 14 business days after the online return center receives the item.

If you made a purchase using PayPal, a refund will be issued in the form of cash if returned to a store, or in the form of an electronic Target GiftCard if returned by mail.

For returns made in store, you may request a different refund option based on the original purchase method below.

If an item is only returnable in store, it will be indicated in the shipping & returns section on the item’s product details page. These items can’t be mailed back to our online return center. Store returnable only items may be designated as hazardous material (hazmat) items because they contain potentially harmful chemicals.

Bring your packing slip or the method of payment used for the original purchase to the store to make your return.

You can access or print a copy of your receipt for a Target.com purchase by signing into your Target.com account. Click here to learn how to print a receipt.

We can also attempt to look up the receipt for your purchase. Bring the item, a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license) and the method of payment used to Guest Services within the return window allowed for that item (see Target Return Policy).

The store can look up receipts for purchases made with the following methods of payment:
  • A Target REDcard™ (Target Debit Card™, Target Credit Card™, Target™ Mastercard®)
  • Third-party Visa®, Mastercard®, American Express®, and Discover® credit cards
  • Checks: You must bring a blank check from the same checking account
  • Target GiftCards: You must have the physical Target GiftCard for look-up

You may exchange or return the item in store with a valid receipt. You can also return Target.com purchases by mail.

To start your online return or exchange:
  1. Sign in to your Target.com account on your order page.
  2. Locate the order and select view details.
  3. Select report damaged item
  4. Select the damaged item from your order, and click continue.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete your return or exchange.
  • If your original purchase included a promotional or discounted price, that price will be applied to your replacement order as well. Once you request a replacement, you cannot return the item to a store as this will cancel the replacement request.

You can return clearance items with a receipt within the appropriate return window depending on the item. Price adjustments can't be made on clearance items or on items for which you don't have the receipt.

You'll receive a sales tax refund for returns made in store or via our online return center.

Please note:
  • If you buy an item in one state and return it in another, the sales tax refund may vary.
  • The amount of sales tax you're charged will vary from state to state.
  • If you return an item in a store, Target requires the original receipt.

You can return a gift to a Target store using the gift receipt you’ll receive a refund in the form of a Target merchandise return card. Please note, a return using a gift receipt can’t be processed the same day the gift was purchased. You’ll need to wait until the next day to return the gift. Only the original receipt can be used to return the gift the same day it was purchased.

You can also return a gift that was purchased on Target.com, in store or by mail with the Target.com packing slip, and you'll receive a refund in the form of a Target GiftCard. To return your gift by mail, call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.

If our online return center has declined a return for any reason, the order will be shipped back to you and you'll receive an email explaining the details of the declined return. Our online return center will send the order back to you via FedEx® and you should receive it within 7 days.
 
Often times our online return center can reuse the tracking number from your return shipment, so you may be able to use this information to track the return of your declined order.
 
A return may be declined for one of the following reasons:
  • Your return was outside of the return window.
  • The item appears worn or used.
  • The item was opened.
  • The item was non-returnable or non-returnable if opened.
  • The online return center wasn't able to locate the order number or other information needed to process the return.
  • The item is not a Target.com item.

If you used a manufacturer's coupon to purchase an item and decide to return that item, you'll receive a refund for the amount you paid for the item plus the amount of the coupon. The amount of the coupon may be refunded in the form of a Target GiftCard.
 
If you used a Target coupon to purchase an item and decide to return that item, you'll receive a refund for the price of the item, minus the coupon value.

Most items, including large items, can be returned to a Target store. Some large items, such as furniture and electronics, may be eligible for return pickup. To determine if your item is eligible for pickup by our return carrier, have your order information handy and call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869. 

Please note:
  • Return items should be disassembled, boxed and brought to the same point of delivery for the carrier to pick up.
  • Pickups are scheduled during the carrier’s normal business hours and typically have an 8-hour pickup window. Depending on your location, carriers may need additional time to pick up your return. 
  • Include the packing slip with your item so our return center can process your refund. 
  • Return pickup is not offered on all items, and is typically reserved for large items weighing more than 150 pounds.
  • A signature by a person who is 18 years or older will be required, unless the delivery method was To-the-Door Delivery.

When purchasing items as part of a Buy One Get One (BOGO) promotion, the promotional discount is based on the lowest priced item, then applied to each item proportionately. If you choose to return any of the items, your refund will be reduced to the discounted amount for each item.

Here are some examples:
  • Buy One, Get One Free: If your first qualifying item is $50 and your second qualifying item is $40, both items will be discounted by $20 for a total discount of $40. If either item is returned, the return value will be equal to the original purchase price reduced by $20. 
  • Buy One, Get One 50% Off: If your first qualifying item is $50 and your second qualifying item is $40, both items will be discounted by $10 for a total discount of $20. If either item is returned, the return value will be equal to the original purchase price reduced by $10.

For most items, you are not required to return the free merchandise/gift card with the qualifying purchase item. However, the amount of the refund will be reduced by the prorated value of the free merchandise or the amount charged for the promotional gift card. The free merchandise can be returned alone, but you'll only receive the prorated value of the free gift. Your receipt shows return values of each item if returned individually and states, "All items must be returned for full refund."
  • Some special promotional items may be non-returnable. Items with this return policy will have the return policy posted by the items and the item will be marked as non-returnable on the receipt.
  • All Target Mobile GiftCards and eGiftCards are non-returnable and non-refundable. Physical Target GiftCards are returnable in store.
  • Promotional gift cards must be returned with qualifying Target Mobile purchases to be eligible for a refund.

Shipping charges may be refunded depending on the reason for your Target.com return. If your shipping charges aren't refunded, please call Target Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869 to see if you're eligible for a refund. You may not be refunded for shipping charges if:
  • The return was declined by our online return center.
  • The return was not due to an error by Target.

If you placed an order and haven’t received it yet, you can refuse your order when the shipper delivers your package. When we receive the returned items, we’ll credit your account for the price of the items and any shipping costs.
