California Used Mattress Recovery Act

On January 1, 2021, an update to the California Used Mattress Recovery Act went into effect. When you buy a new mattress and have it delivered to an address in California, the retailer may be obligated to pick up and take back one qualifying old mattress from the same address at no cost.
  • This act covers the following new mattresses purchases:
    • Mattresses, which are defined as any sleep surface covered with ticking or fabric that contains resilient material such as steel innersprings, foam, fiber or other filling or upholstery materials, used alone or in combination, regardless of size or shape, except for those products listed below that are not in scope.
    • Futon mattresses that detach from the frame or base
    • Box springs (also commonly called foundations): A ticking or fabric-covered structure used to support a mattress or sleep surface and may be comprised of a frame, foam, springs or other structure, or other materials, used alone or in combination, regardless of whether the product is stationary or adjustable.
  • Items that do not qualify:
    • Air mattresses that contain no upholstery material (such as camping beds)
    • Car beds
    • Juvenile products including, carriages, baskets, dressing tables, strollers, playpens, infant carriers, lounge pad, crib bumpers
    • Crib and bassinet mattresses
    • Mattress pads and toppers
    • Pillows
    • Sleeping bags
    • Collapsible roll-away beds
    • Sleeper sofas
    • Futon bases or frames
    • Futon mattresses that do not detach from the frame or base
    • Water beds that contain no upholstery material
    • In addition, some exclusions will apply based on the condition of an otherwise eligible, used mattress. Those that are severely damaged, twisted, wet, frozen, soiled or infested will be declined to be picked up.

To arrange to get your old mattress picked up:
  • To arrange for your eligible, used mattress to be picked up within 30 days of the delivery of a new mattress to a California address, call 1-800-591-3869 and ask to schedule a used mattress pick up.
  • Guests are eligible to have one used mattress/mattress set picked up for each delivery of  a new mattress/mattress set to a California address.
