Pre-orders

Target Help

When an item is available for preorder, you will have the option to Preorder on the product detail page.

When an item is available for preorder, there is a limited quantity of Preorder inventory available. Once the limit has been met, no additional preorders can be submitted. If a preorder gets canceled for any reason, we’re unable to reinstate the order and you may be unable to re-order if the limit has been met. Once all preorders have shipped, any remaining inventory will then become available for purchase.

Target publishes a preorder item’s release date once we receive it from the item’s vendor. If an official release date hasn’t yet been set by the vendor, our website and app will show Release date to be announced

Note that, even after a release date is set, vendors may change a previously advertised release date. Learn about release dates changing for Pre-order items.

Sometimes we have a release date, but other times we may only have a placeholder date until the official release date is determined. Either way, we display dates that are approved and provided by the vendor.

Vendors may change a previously advertised release date. When this happens, we’ll inform you via email to the email address associated with your Target account. If requested, please follow the link in the email to confirm that you still want the preordered item via your Target account or the Target app. Please make that confirmation as soon as possible; if not confirmed, Target must cancel your preorder. You won’t be charged, but we also cannot guarantee that you’ll be able to place another preorder for the canceled item.

We endeavor to get your preorder item to your selected delivery location by the estimated delivery date provided in your Order Confirmation email, which is typically on or shortly after the release date.

We're testing Order Pickup and Drive Up options for select preorder items and at select stores for release date pickup. Although preorder pickup is not available at all stores, we're working to expand in the future. If an item is eligible for Order Pickup or Drive Up Up in your area, you'll see the option on the item page and in your cart.

  • Estimated Delivery Date: Preorders are fulfilled based on the release date provided by the vendor. Once we have a confirmed release date, we'll provide you with an estimated delivery date. The release date is not always the same as the delivery date.
  • Drive Up / Order Pickup: If your preorder is eligible for Drive Up or Order Pickup, you'll automatically receive an email when your order is ready on the release date.

When you place an order for a preorder item, we will send an authorization hold request to your card issuer to ensure funds are available. The authorization hold is not an actual charge.

Based on your order type:

  • If you ordered only a preorder item:
    • The initial authorization hold will be removed a few days after the order is placed.
    • A new authorization hold will be placed 7 days before the street date.
  • If you ordered the preorder item with other items:
    • The initial authorization hold will be removed a few days after the order is placed and after you’ve been charged for the non-preorder items
    • A new authorization hold will be placed 7 days before the street date, for the remaining amount of the preorder item.

If any attempt to renew the authorization fails, we’ll notify you and invite you to update your payment tender, as long as the tender or order is eligible to be modified. Some tenders or orders are not eligible and in those instances, your order may be canceled. You won’t be charged for your order until it ships or is ready for pickup.

Visit here to learn more about authorization holds.

We do a systematic price check when a preorder item is ready to be shipped. At the time of shipment, we will invoice you for the exact price of the item. If the price of a preorder item is lowered after you placed the order but then goes back up again by the time the item ships, the system won’t automatically invoice you for the lowest price.
