How does Target.com calculate sales tax?

Sales tax is a combined total of state, county, city, and district tax rates. These rates are based on either the shipment-origin address, or the ship-to address, as dictated by each state’s tax law. For your convenience, we provide a sales-tax estimate during checkout, and on your order confirmation summary. However, many factors can change between the time you place your order and when it ships. Because of this, your final sales-tax charges may be different from the estimated amount.

Tax-exempt purchases will show estimated sales tax at checkout and on your order confirmation summary. Once the order ships, the invoice will reflect your exemption. A breakdown of charges will be displayed on the Target.com invoices for your order, including any sales tax, if applicable.

Does Target charge sales tax in every state?

Target charges sales tax in every U.S. state except those that do not have a sales tax:

Alaska - Target collect applicable local sales taxes
Delaware
Montana
New Hampshire
Oregon

Additionally, orders shipped to Puerto Rico will be charged sales tax. While a tax estimate may not be provided at checkout or in your order acknowledgement email, sales tax will be reflected on your order invoice and shipping confirmation email.

Does Target sell any items tax-free?

Target does not charge sales tax for Target GiftCards. However, purchases made with Target GiftCards may be subject to tax.

Additionally, some categories of items are not taxed in certain states.

Where can I find information about tax-free sales events?

These events or holidays occur in a number of states throughout the year. Both Target.com and Target stores participate in tax-free sales events, and will honor tax exemption on qualifying items for the duration of the event. Visit your state's Department of Revenue website for complete details.

How do I create a tax-exempt Target.com account?

Create a Target.com user account by accessing Target.com or downloading the Target app. Keep in mind that this account can't be used for personal purchases.
Email the following to tax.exempt@target.com. If you would like to set up multiple users, please submit all of the required information below for each individual user.
- Proof of exemption in PNG, JPG or PDF format for the state(s) where the items will be shipped. Please note, any incomplete information on your exemption document (signature, date, not checking every applicable box) will result in a request for you to resubmit the document with complete information.
- Organization Name
- Name (Primary Purchaser)
- Address
- City
- State
- Postal Code
- Phone Number
- The Target.com user account email for your organization
- Organization Type: (Nonprofit Organization or Government)
Once approved, you'll be notified via email. All subsequent purchases made with the account and shipped to the documented exemption state(s) will be tax-free.
- Add tax.exempt@target.com to your contact list to ensure you receive all future correspondence from our team.

How do I receive a refund for tax charged on a tax-exempt order?

To receive a refund for taxes paid on exempt Target.com purchases, email tax.exempt@target.com with your proof of exemption documentation. For exempt purchases made in store, please return to the store for assistance. Keep in mind Target does not accept that resale exemption certificates. Diplomatic tax exemptions such as personal and mission tax exemption cards may be used to obtain exemption status in person at the point-of-sale but aren't valid for online purchases.

Am I eligible for tax-exempt status on Target.com and in Target stores?

Government bodies, not-for-profit organizations, and other similar entities are welcome to apply for exemption with us. Resale exemption certificates will not be accepted, effective May 15, 2015. GSA Smart Pay Cards aren’t eligible for exemption on Target.com. However, you may provide a copy of your card with the last four digits unmasked to receive a onetime refund on an existing Target.com order as a courtesy. (DO NOT send us a fully revealed GSA card number).
